Taking average rps and moving them to the next level Part 1 (Evaluation)

Written by Chris McGowen

First and foremost let me just say that there is no set in stone way to try to take your game to the next level and this is not a process that is going to be overnight. This is something that you’re going to have to dedicate yourself to try and do. You might not see instant results from trying to make your rps better but if you continue and persist I can almost guarantee you that you will succeed. Remember “Success comes before work only in the dictionary.”

Now we’ve all seen them, rp’s that are just run of the mill ,cookie cutter or maybe even just plain bad. As the user that is writing this type of rp, you keep getting discouraged because week after week you keep on trying to put something together and you just keep getting beaten. Sometimes even you know that you should lose because your rp does not even compare to the competition. Sometimes you even go to a federation where you already know that you’re going to lose from week to week because the guys there just come up with awesome rp’s consistently. Don’t give up hope. I can guarantee you that everyone that you’re facing against has been there also. I personally know that in my first fed I couldn’t spell a win. I tried to upgrade my game and I still lost even when I thought that I should’ve won, but like I said before this takes time.

“What do I need to do?”, is probably going through your head right now. The very first thing that I would suggest and what we will discuss today in part one is sitting back and deciding what you are going to do with your wrestler. All of us when we decide to go into efedding have somewhat of a general idea of how we want our wrestler to act or do. Some of us want the beer guzzling redneck persona such as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, some of us want the best there was, best there is and best there ever will be type of persona like Ric Flair while some of us want the dark and ominous persona such as Undertaker and Kane. Well, now that you’ve been efedding for a while, how is that persona working for you? Few of us keep our wrestler where we first envision them to be. Whether it’s from noticing other ewrestlers or maybe it was a cool idea we had on our own but ewrestlers evolve and now we need to decide what stage you want your wrestler to be at now. Is he going to come out and trash talk everyone every week trying to belittle them and make them feel as if they’re lower than low, is he going to have family issues that he (or she) needs to resolve that may be affecting him in the ring, or is he going to be almost comic relief and his rps are nothing but his next series of comical escapades? This is something that only you as the writer can determine. You need to decide where your wrestler is at right now, what you want to do with him or her and decide what direction you are going to take your wrestler in his rp’s as well as in the ring and remember this is only a starting point, you don’t have to limit yourself to it. I would also recommend that you not try to rewrite your wrestler’s history. Just because your guy lost fifty matches in a row, use that it helps build character.

Now we have the starting point. Let’s say that your wrestler’s name is John Doe. John has been losing for quite a while but his last match he actually pulled out a win. Use that as you know what it’s like to actually lose that many matches right. I would always advise you to write what you know as it helps you to add that little extra to make the rp more personal. Anyway, John got his first win after the other wrestler didn’t show so you decide that John is now gonna come out a bit cockier having a little edge and is now calling himself the F’n Man. Good. Try and come up with some other small things that will help with John Doe also. Maybe he now has a girlfriend, maybe he has developed a tic from losing so much, maybe he is even a virgin who masturbates every night but the possibilities are endless just remember to write what you know.

I hope this helps. Just remember that this is a process and that before you can really do anything you have to see where you’re at and then decide where you’re gonna go and make sure to leave room for improvisation.

Very good points… there’s an upcoming Uncle Mike’s Ramblings that deals with some of these same issues- specifically, how Snake went through the same adjustments you talk about here.
